About us
The Royal Marsden was the first hospital in the world dedicated to the study and treatment of cancer. We fundraise to support this founding vision.
The history of The Royal Marsden
The Royal Marsden has led the way in cancer research and treatment since it was founded in 1851.
1851
The Royal Marsden was founded as the Free Cancer Hospital in 1851 by Dr William Marsden after losing his wife, Elizabeth Ann from cancer. It was initially located at 1 Cannon Row, Westminster.
1862
The Royal Marsden site on Fulham Road was secured to accommodate the growing need for in-patient care, thanks to funding from Baroness Burdett-Coutts.
1948
The NHS was formed and The Royal Marsden became a postgraduate teaching hospital.
1963
In response to the need to expand the hospital’s capacity to treat more patients and train more doctors, a second hospital was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Sutton, Surrey.
2023
The Sutton site expanded with the opening of the Oak Cancer Centre.
